The significance of Republic Day:

January 26th, is a day when our patriotism levels are at an all time high. It is the day that our nation commemorates the date on which the constitution of India came into effect and the country became a republic. This year we are celebrating our 67th republic day and if you have the day off, you should watch the republic day parade on Doordarshan (yes, it is still around) with your family.  It showcases the various aspects of our country like arts, crafts, defence etc.

After that why not schedule a little parade of your own? A small show and tell parade with finger puppets of our national animals will surely delight your kiddos and educate them about our national symbols in a fun way.

India Republic day craft for kids in the form of National animals:

I have taken 4 such VIPs who have national importance for my show and tell. They are the tiger (national animal), peacock (national bird) and king cobra (national reptile), elephant (national heritage animal). Since I can’t get the animals home, I have decided to make some very easy finger puppets.

#1. Tiger

Tiger, the lord of the jungles is the National animal of India.

Cut it out, so you have two shapes those are slightly bigger than your finger. This is for the body of the tiger. Next draw two ears on the orange sheet and cut it out, cut two more ears on the white paper that are smaller than the orange ones. Stick the white ear shaped pieces on the orange ones.

Draw the body of the peacock on the blue paper like you did for the tiger, but here make sure to leave a margin of 2.5 cm than the size of your finger. Cut it out.

Next we need to make the tail feathers, for that, cut out a green semi- circle with scalloped edges like shown in the picture. Cut out a blue semi semi-circle with scalloped edges that are smaller than the green one (refer the picture). Cut one more green semi- circle which is the smallest of the three. Cut small blue oval shapes (like the ones shown in the image) to stick on the outer edge of the tail.

How to do the Republic day craft DIY National Animals show and tell?

The show and tell must be age appropriate. For the little ones you can just introduce these animals and include them in a story. A story about how the four went to Delhi to see the republic day parade will be a great story. Feel free to add as many elements like the sound and color of these animals.

For the slightly older kids, you can add more details as to why these animals were chosen. Make into a game where they have to find out the significance of each animal, the places where they are found and the conservation status.

A stay at home mom for a feisty 19 month old named Ahaana, Chitra Santosh has rekindled her romance with words once again now. Though Arakkonam is her home, she can be seen migrating to Mavelikara, a quaint little town in Alappey during summers. Studies have shown that this has no connection with the migratory patterns of birds.
